Tulsa: Ringing in the New Year

Visitors to Tulsa often say their experience far outweighs their expectations. Not overly surprising for a city of almost 1 million people that has been ranked one of the nation’s Most Livable Cities and was recently ranked the No. 7 strongest U.S. metro economy in its list of the 40 top economies by Business Week. The city provides the facilities and amenities meeting planners need with the hospitality and experience that make it an ideal destination.

Centrally located in the U.S., Tulsa is an affordable and easy drive-in destination for events and conferences. For those who want to fly, Tulsa International Airport (www.tulsaairports.com) is just 15 minutes from downtown and offers major airline service daily through most major carriers.

The Tulsa Convention Center’s new Tulsa Ballroom is nearly complete. Renovation to the Convention Center is also nearing completion and will amount to 300,000 square feet of flexible meeting space and the largest ballroom in the state at 30,000 square feet. An added benefit, Tulsa Convention Center is connected to the Downtown Doubletree Hotel (www.tulsadowntown.doubletree.com), a full-service hotel with more than 400 rooms and an additional 22,876 square feet of meeting space.

Tulsa’s BOK Center (www.bokcenter.com), a Cesar Pelli-designed multi-purpose arena, is the new home of a WNBA team. The Center sits directly across from the Tulsa Convention Center and features 19,122 permanent and retractable seats and 38 luxury suites, loge boxes and club seats.

After the meeting is over, groups can find plenty of excitement throughout the historic city. Take an art deco tour of downtown or enjoy a unique experience in the Blue Dome and Brady Districts — both well-known arts and entertainment areas - visitors will find dozens of restaurant options, clubs, one-of-a-kind shops and specialty stores.

Upon completion of construction in 2010, visitors will also be able to enjoy a Tulsa Drillers (www.tulsadrillers.com) baseball game at the new ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa.

Tulsa has meeting space and entertainment to offer beyond downtown as well. If you are in need of exhibit space, look no further than Tulsa’s QuikTrip Center at Expo Square (www.exposquare.com) home to the largest exhibit space in the region, boasting 400,000 square feet, with more than 5,000 seats in the arena/pavilion.

If you are looking for something more intimate, be sure to check out the six major conference hotels in the Tulsa area including the Doubletree at Warren Place (www.doubletreehotelwarrenplace.com) and Renaissance Tulsa Hotel and Convention Center (www.renaissancetulsa.com). The Doubletree provides 370 rooms and 18,000 square feet of meeting, exhibit and ballroom space, including a state-of-the-art amphitheater with tiered seating.

Ranked by AAA as the Most Affordable travel destination, planners and organizers are taking a closer look at the value Tulsa—downtown and all around the city – can provide for their next event.
